Cool-headed Marco Wittmann scores second win of the season

For Marco Wittmann the return of the DTM to the Hungaroring after 26 years was worth it. The BMW pilot celebrated an unchallenged lights-to-flag victory on Sunday in Budapest and took over the lead in the overall classification. The 24-year-old headed into the race from pole position on the ultra-fast Ventus Race Plus option tyres of premium manufacturer Hankook, and convincingly defended his lead in the second half of the race with the baseline slick Ventus Race tyres.
 
Budapest/Germany, 01 June 2014 – Scoring his second win of the season in the most popular international touring car series, Marco Wittmann underlined that he is the key contender in this year’s title fight. Cool-headed and flawless, the BMW pilot turned his laps to cross the finish line as the clear winner after 1:08:35.291.  For Miguel Molina (Audi), second place put an end to his bad luck streak in the first two races of the season. Like Wittmann, the Spaniard ran on the soft option tyres for the maximum possible distance of 19 laps before switching to the baseline slick. A tactic that worked perfectly.

Bruno Spengler, who started on the harder Ventus Race rubber was just 50 seconds shy of Wittmann when he came in for his pit stop. Running on Ventus Race Plus, the BMW pilot pushed his way up the order in the second half of the race and was rewarded with his first podium spot of the season with third. The defending DTM champion Mike Rockenfeller (Audi) earned one point for tenth place, but lost his lead in the overall classification to the race winner Marco Wittmann. Robert Wickens had moved up into seventh place, but fell back down the field and ultimately had to settle for eleventh. This made the Canadian the best one among the Mercedes-Benz drivers.

“The Hankook race tyres worked well on the bumpy and twisty Hungarian circuit. After the qualifying, the racing line was clear of sand and grass, improving the level of grip significantly. Spectators witnessed an exciting race and were treated to many overtaking manoeuvres thanks to the different tyre tactics,” concluded Hankook’s race engineer Christophe Stucki.

Marco Wittmann (BMW): “I was able to really attack on the option tyres from the start of the race until the pit stop. Then with the baseline tyre it was all about holding the pace over the distance, and this worked perfectly. Now I’m really looking forward to the Norisring, because that’s my home.”

Miguel Molina (Audi): “We chose exactly the right time to change the tyres. My lap times were good and I felt very good with the tyres. Unfortunately Marco had pulled too far ahead to catch, but we are happy with this result.”
Bruno Spengler (BMW): “I had a lot of fun on the option tyres today – they held up and I could rely on a constant performance. That was decisive and this great result feels like a win to me.”

Robert Wickens (Mercedes-Benz): “Of course I would like to have been faster this weekend, but we know where we stand and we still have work ahead of us. It went well with the tyres, particularly with the option tyres.”
